5th Vietnamese Book and Reading Culture Day 2026 opens in Thai Nguyen
On the morning of April 16, at Doi Can High School (An Khanh commune), the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in coordination with the Department of Education and Training and Thai Nguyen Province Youth Union, held the opening ceremony of the 5th Vietnamese Book and Reading Culture Day 2026, while also launching the 2026 Thai Nguyen Province Reading Culture Ambassador Contest.

The program took place in a vibrant atmosphere, drawing a large number of officials, teachers, students and readers from across the area to participate in a variety of meaningful activities aimed at spreading reading culture throughout the community. Highlights included: a theatrical book promotion competition under the theme “The Book I Love”; a creative book display and arrangement competition; a book donation drive in support of school library construction; free reading sessions and public internet access via a multimedia mobile library vehicle; and a knowledge quiz game show “Little Wise Ones” on books and reading culture.
Under the theme “Developing Reading Culture – The Foundation for Building a Learning Society,” this year’s Book and Reading Culture Day aims to ignite a passion for reading, cultivate reading habits and skills among students; and raise public awareness of the role and significance of books in advancing knowledge and developing human character.

Speaking at the program, Nguyen Van Ngoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, emphasized: Books are a treasured repository of knowledge – a teacher and companion that helps each individual grow and aspire to noble human values. Accordingly, the development of reading culture carries profound importance in raising public education standards, nurturing character and contributing to the building of a learning society.
At the program, the Organizing Committee also officially launched the 2026 Thai Nguyen Province Reading Culture Ambassador Contest under the theme “Preserving National Cultural Identity”. The contest is expected to run from April to July 2026, providing a constructive platform for students across the province, encouraging them to share their reflections on books, spread a love of reading and strengthen awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting national cultural values.

Vietnamese Book and Reading Culture Day was designated by the Prime Minister as an annual observance on April 21 pursuant to Decision No. 1862/QD-TTg dated November 4, 2021. This is a meaningful initiative to affirm the role and importance of books in enhancing knowledge, developing critical thinking and nurturing human character; as well as to encourage and promote a reading movement in the community, fostering a conducive reading environment within families, schools and society at large.
