Student Hoang Duc Chung
Growing up in Van Lang, a particularly disadvantaged commune in Dong Hy District, Hoang Duc Chung always set a personal goal to strive in his studies and acquire knowledge to build a better future. In 2020, Chung was admitted to university as the valedictorian in the field of Computer Engineering under the Faculty of Electronics at the University of Technology and Industry - Thai Nguyen University. Chung shared his passion for computer engineering: "Once, while accompanying my mother to the commune People's Committee, I saw people using computers and immediately fell in love with them. From that moment, I dreamed of owning a computer and mastering computer engineering".

Hoang Duc Chung has been recognized as an outstanding student of Thai Nguyen University for many years, with numerous achievements in academics, scientific research and extracurricular activities
From the moment he stepped into the University lecture hall, Chung dedicated himself not only to classroom lessons but also to scientific research. Applying the knowledge he gained, he spent hours daily practicing on the computer to master programming languages. Hoang Duc Chung explained: Computer engineering combines electronics and information technology, researching methods and principles to design and develop hardware systems while simultaneously creating software to enhance automation in those hardware devices. In my first year, I faced more challenges than my peers, most of whom grew up in cities and had early access to computers. However, I saw it as an opportunity to learn and expand my knowledge by engaging with an entirely new field.
Through relentless effort and determination, at a time when scientific research among students was still relatively novel, Hoang Duc Chung successfully led the research project titled "Developing Software for Human Face Recognition via Camera on Low-Performance Computers". The project aimed to study an AI robot capable of hearing, seeing, sensing, moving, operating, speaking and thinking, integrated with multiple modules using algorithms and artificial intelligence. The research results demonstrated a high accuracy rate in identifying and correctly naming individuals. This project was rated outstanding at the University-level scientific research awards in 2022. Chung shared: "Through scientific research, I gained valuable experience, learned problem-solving and critical thinking skills, mastered scientific report writing, teamwork and how to present research findings and ideas. I hope that with the knowledge and results I’ve achieved, I can further refine my thinking, seize opportunities and expand this project in the future".

In 2024, Hoang Duc Chung continued to lead another scientific research project titled “Developing a Virtual Assistant Program to Support Monitoring and Reminding Students During Self-Study at Home Using Computer Vision Technology”. The program aims to address the rising prevalence of vision-related issues among students due to prolonged exposure to electronic devices. Chung shared insights about the project: "In modern life, the frequent use of electronic devices by children, especially school-aged students, has become widespread. While these devices provide access to knowledge, extended usage can significantly impact students’ health. Recognizing this issue, I collaborated with my peers to develop a virtual assistant program to support, monitor and remind students during self-study at home. Utilizing computer vision technology, the program issues timely alerts when students adopt incorrect postures such as slouching or sitting too close to the screen and provides warnings when they exceed the recommended screen time for their age group.
In addition, Hoang Duc Chung successfully published one scientific research paper at Thai Nguyen University level and two at the University level, while also earning third place at the 11th Electronics Faculty Student Innovation Competition in 2024 with the product “AI is Me” - a system that integrates AI and a Telegram chatbot for analyzing images from security cameras. Chung also secured second place at the 24th National Student Physics Olympiad in 2022.
Beyond his passion for scientific research, Hoang Duc Chung actively participates in youth union activities. Currently, he serves as Vice Chairman of the Thai Nguyen Province Vietnam Student Association and Vice Chairman of the Student Association of Thai Nguyen University of Technology. In his role in developing the Youth Union, Chung is working diligently to apply AI to enhance union activities. He stated: "In the context of the thriving Fourth Industrial Revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an indispensable part of modern life, profoundly impacting all sectors. For youth unions and associations, adopting AI is not only an inevitable trend but also an opportunity to enhance operational efficiency, attract and connect young people in the digital era. In terms of union activities, the Student Association of Thai Nguyen University of Technology is actively leveraging AI to organize initiatives that foster connection and promote movements within the University.
With an “AI First” mindset and small yet meaningful contributions, the young citizen Hoang Duc Chung is helping to drive the “Common People Learn AI - Tea Land AI” movement. Exemplars like Hoang Duc Chung deserve to be celebrated and shared, inspiring more “gardens of creativity” among the youth, contributing to a thriving and prosperous Thai Nguyen.
